Job Summary

The Global Executive Director of People is the immediate supervisor of this senior leadership position at WaterAid UK. As a key member of the WaterAid UK leadership team, the people director contributes to the strategic execution of WaterAid’s mission while also participating in the Global People Executive for cohesive global HR strategy alignment.

The individual will lead the WaterAid UK People Team, implementing and managing highly efficient HR services and ensuring the organization meets its people goals at both local and international levels.

The executive support manager, head of people international, head of people UK, talent acquisition lead, internal communications & engagement partner, global safety & security lead, and global reward & mobility lead are some of the key positions that fall under this category.

Accountabilities

  • Lead efforts to make WaterAid UK a top-tier workplace by recruiting, engaging, and retaining high-performing and purpose-driven staff.
  • Actively advance WaterAid’s basic principles and lead efforts to improve inclusion, equity, and diversity throughout the company.
  • Guide and mentor the UK People Team to deliver WaterAid’s global people strategy, ensuring excellence in talent management, employee engagement, and performance support.
  • Assess and optimize WaterAid UK’s structure and internal processes to improve operational efficiency and adaptability.
  • Provide hands-on leadership, mentoring, and support to people teams in WaterAid-supported countries, recognizing the unique challenges in each location.
  • Ensure effective deployment of HR technologies, systems, and tools that enable strategic workforce planning and operational excellence.
  • Engage externally with HR networks and thought leaders to ensure WaterAid UK remains a progressive, people-first organization.
  • Develop and deliver HR strategies aligned with WaterAid UK priorities, including initiatives such as leadership development, hybrid working, and performance culture enhancement.
  • Track HR performance indicators and support the embedding of safeguarding and safety standards across WaterAid’s programs.

Requirements

Essential Skills and Competencies:

  • Proven leadership in developing and implementing people strategies within an international, multicultural setting.
  • Excellent judgment and the ability to provide trusted counsel to senior leadership.

  • Collaborative and experienced in change management and organizational design.
  • Strong coaching, mentoring, and capacity-building approach.
  • Data-driven, with expertise in analytics and HRIS system integration.
  • Willingness to travel internationally as required.
  • A history of cultivating inclusive and high-performance workplace cultures.
  • Emotional intelligence and strong interpersonal skills.

Desirable:

  • Proficiency in French or other languages spoken in WaterAid program countries.
  • Prior experience working in the international development sector, preferably in-country.
