Job Title: Financial Controller
Location: Lagos
Job Summary
This role is responsible for managing MHF’s financial portfolio, including the preparation of the Annual Budget, Capital Improvement Program, Comprehensive Annual Financial Report (CAFR), fund investments, risk management, insurance coordination, long-term financial forecasting and evaluation, along with the daily supervision of the finance department’s operations, including utility billing functions.
Roles & Responsibilities
Strategic:
- Deliver accurate and timely financial services, including setting and monitoring budgets, forecasts, asset management, cash flow reporting, variance analysis, and financial reviews in line with generally accepted accounting principles.
- Keep MHF leadership informed on financial updates, progress, and key changes to support strategic decision-making.
- Contribute to the development of organizational goals, long-term strategies, and operational policies and procedures.
- Guarantee accurate statutory filings, timely preparation of yearly financial reports, and full adherence to VAT regulations.
- Establish and nurture key partnerships with banking institutions and other relevant financial bodies.
- Manage audit processes to meet statutory deadlines.
- Collaborate with the COO to develop and implement cost management strategies across the organization.
- Offer strategic insights and recommendations on project financing while managing cash flow and forecasts.
Operational:
- Lead and supervise daily finance operations in alignment with approved programs and schedules.
- Partner with other MHF departments to define and enforce financial policies and procedures, covering payments, invoicing, and refunds.
- Approve expenditures and disbursements according to MHF’s authorization limits and policies.
- Define processes, policies, and systems for asset, cash, and forex management.
- Ensure timely funding of capital projects.
- Oversee monthly reconciliation of bank and cash accounts for MD/CEO reporting.
- Implement a robust financial reporting framework to ensure accuracy and timely delivery of management reports.
Qualifications, Experience, Skills & Competencies
Education and Work Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or related discipline.
- An MBA is a strong advantage.
- At least 8 years of experience, with 5 years in senior financial or operational positions after qualification.
- Must have a professional finance certification (ACA, ACCA, CIMA, CFA, ICAN).
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Familiarity with accounting systems such as SAP or SAGE.
- Experience in the real estate or property sector is desirable, though not required.
Skills and Competencies:
- Extensive knowledge of financial and accounting standards, including IFRS.
- Solid knowledge of tax laws, pension regulations, and statutory compliance.
- Capable of working effectively under pressure and meeting tight deadlines.
- Self-driven with strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
- Effective leadership and people management abilities.
- Skilled in mentoring and coaching team members.
- Strong communication abilities, including report writing and presentations.
- Strong proficiency in English; knowledge of other languages is a bonus.
