About this Position
The Assistant Manager, Tax & Accounting will work under the supervision of the Head of GA, Tax, Treasury & OTC. This role is responsible for ensuring full compliance with statutory tax regulations and transfer pricing obligations. The candidate will coordinate external tax consultants and build strong relationships with relevant tax authorities.
The role involves keeping management updated on tax developments, reviewing agreements for compliance, and identifying tax-saving opportunities. The ideal candidate must be self-motivated, experienced in taxation, and capable of working independently.
Responsibilities
What you’ll do:
- Take ownership of the company’s tax compliance processes, including filing of monthly and annual tax returns, transfer pricing documentation, deferred tax calculations, capital allowance assessments, and profit adjustments for tax purposes.
- Serve as the main point of contact for all external tax consultants and build solid relationships with Nigerian tax authorities.
- Handle tax audits, respond to audit inquiries, manage transfer pricing reviews, and attend to other regulatory inspections.
- Ensure tax accounts in the general ledger are accurate and perform tax journal reconciliations.
- Review all business contracts to ensure tax compliance and seek guidance from consultants when necessary.
- Collaborate with the HR team to guarantee compliance with employee-related taxes and statutory contributions.
- Secure the company’s annual tax clearance certificates.
- Provide periodic advice to HR regarding employee tax optimization strategies.
- Oversee the recording and labeling of fixed assets to ensure accurate tracking and accounting.
- Prepare comprehensive transfer pricing policy documentation.
- Assess intercompany agreements to ensure compliance with local tax laws and regulations.
- Work closely with cross-functional teams to understand new business activities and evaluate their tax implications.
- Support and mentor finance staff responsible for invoice entries in the accounting system.
- Spot tax planning opportunities and work with internal teams to implement expert advice.
- Handle any tax or finance-related tasks assigned on an ad-hoc basis.
Requirements
What makes you a good fit:
- B.Sc./M.Sc. in Accounting or a related field
- At least 5 years of progressive experience in tax or related roles.
- Solid knowledge of ERP systems
- Highly organized and self-driven
- Strong communication and presentation abilities
- Excellent analytical and numerical skills
- Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Word
- CITN membership required
- Chartered Accountant (ICAN or equivalent)
- Proficient in Nigerian tax laws and financial regulations
- Hands-on approach to challenges and problem-solving
